I wanted to share with you all, the wonderful day that we had on November 2nd. I wrote about this coming event in a previous blog. We had a women’s conference at our local church, and I was the invited speaker. The theme was: has feminism fogged up our vision on our role as women according to the Word of God?
This was a most splendid day for the glory of God! What an incredible time of encouragement for the women as for myself. Such a wonderful time of communion and edifying of one another. We had the most sublime conversations that pushed us more and more towards looking at our position in Christ and our role in the society as audacious women of God.
I am fully aware that it was harder to hear for some than others. Yet I also know that God continues His work in the hearts of his beloved at the pace that we let Him work in our lives and that which we are ready. Â I was only the one, who for that day God granted the privilege to deliver a message that He had place on my heart, with great passion for the women, for His glory.

Studying a whole book of the Bible is one of the best ways to really understand and interpret well the verses in their context. Sue Edwards has written many different study books to accompany you on your study of the Bible that could definitely be of great help. Here is the link.
Ephesians is one of them.
I am blogging this week, along with many others, as we will be continuing to go through the book of Ephesians together. This week we are on lesson 8 and working our way through these verses: Ephesians 5: 21- 6: 9. You can follow along here.
Understanding verse 21 is extremely important in our application of everything else that will follow these verses!
21Â Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Â
I know “submission” is a very controversial subject, especially among complementarians and egalitarians. But does this mean that we cannot talk about submission?
How do we choose to live out those convictions daily?
Do Christian women really still submit to their husbands in 2013?
Is that even biblical?
This lesson is a very challenging one! But the verses are in the book. Stay with me; I know it’s not easy to talk about this, yet it is in our Bibles ladies!
“We must understand that, in our Bibles, there is a break between these verses and the verses which precede them. However, Paul is making a transition between two parts in order to introduce the subject of submission, which spans out from chapter 5 to chapter 6 verse 9 without any breaks. It is a logical and seamless progression of what Paul is teaching to the Ephesians. In verse 21, Paul talks about mutual submission we must demonstrate to one another in the fear of Christ according to divine order. But several biblical translations are written with breaks and sub-headings and are separated by chapters and verse for easy reading. Unfortunately, this can sometimes complicate our understanding of the message when we want to pursue and in depth study of the scriptures.
You see, we cannot dissociate biblical texts. We must understand that, right from the start, there is a basic submission to God, as we saw previously. Then, God asks us to submit to each other as brothers and sisters in the faith, a submission which results from our faith and our relationship with Jesus-Christ. It is a general principle of mutual and biblical submission which comes from the word of God and that the Holy Spirit helps us to put in practice in our lives. It is only after these clarifications that Paul introduces the theme of submission to our husbands. I want to make sure that I am clear on this subject by specifying that when the word of God affirms that women must submit themselves to their husbands, it is exactly what It says and we must obey.” 1
Here is something from John Piper that I love which definitely explains well the true essence of these verses.
“In the home when a husband leads like Christ and a wife responds like the bride of Christ, there is a harmony and mutuality that is more beautiful and more satisfying than any pattern of marriage created by man. Biblical headship for the husband is the divine calling to take primary responsibility for Christlike, servant-leadership, protection and provision in the home. Biblical submission for the wife is the divine calling to honor and affirm her husband’s leadership and help carry it through according to her gifts. This is the way of joy. For God loves his people and he loves his glory. And therefore when we follow his idea of marriage (sketched in texts like Genesis 2:18-24; Proverbs 5:15-19; 31:10-31; Mark 10:2-12; Ephesians 5:21-33; Colossians 3:18-19; and 1 Peter 3:1-7) we are most satisfied and he is most glorified.” 2
I am aware that I am not giving you any information as to what submission implies in a women’s everyday life. This was not the primary basis for this blog today. Today I mostly wanted to make clear the difference between the principle of mutual submission and submission towards our husbands.
We must first and foremost remember that submission is an attitude of the heart prompted by the Holy Spirit. This is a desire that starts from within, as Christ being our ultimate example as we see clearly in Ephesians. We submit to God first. Which then ultimately leads us to submit to our own husbands out of love and respect.
In Sue Edwards’s workbook she has wonderful questions to help us reflect and dig deeper in our search for the truth. Some quotes from different authors that at times might even jolt you a bit! It’s a great study tool if you are interested in going just a little deeper into the Word of God without spending half a day studying.
